The Essential Elements Of A Story
There are few things more magical to a writer than an idea. That initial spark of inspiration, that tiny kernel that nestles itself in your mind – slowly growing and developing, taking shape and form.
A story has five basic elements: characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution. These essential elements keep the story running smoothly and allow the action to develop in a logical way that the reader can follow.
Putting together a book correctly will get you the book sales you’re looking for and good reviews.
Writing – what is between the covers. Design and content make up the entirety of the book, including the title, introduction, body, conclusion, and back cover.
CHARACTERS
The characters are the individuals that the story is about. The author should introduce the characters in the story with enough information that the reader can visualize each person.
SETTING
The location of the action. Describe the environment or surroundings of the story in such detail that the reader feels that he or she can picture the scene.
PLOT
The story around which the entire book is based. A plot should have a very clear beginning, middle, and end—with all the necessary descriptions and suspense, called exposition—so that the reader can make sense of the action and follow from start to finish.
CONFLICT
Every story has a conflict to resolve. Just before the resolution is the climax.
RESOLUTION
The solution to the problem is the way the action is resolved. It is important that the resolution fit the rest of the story in tone and creativity and solve all parts of the conflict.
Every book should have a copyright page and a table of contents is often used for non-fiction.
