When I asked myself that question, I thought I knew the answer. But then I wondered. The question is: how do you know when you have found your spiritual animal? Is it when you are driving your Jeep down a dusty back-road and you come across an abandoned wolf cub? Or is it that your spirit animal must choose you? Is it when a stray cat walks into your house? Or when an owl refuses to leave the tree in your back yard?
Science has evidence that DNA matches can be found between humans, animals and plants – intertwining all living things. Indigenous people call this Wakan Tanka or The Great Spirit. Channel into your animalistic side and discover your spiritual animal. The term can be used as a metaphor, often humorous, for someone or something a person relates to or admires.
A Spirit Animal is a teacher, messenger, omen, or guide who is there to help you in some area of your life. Our Spirit Animal can teach us lessons surrounding courage, empowerment, interconnectedness, learning to love fully, and finding freedom.
In spiritual cultures, a spirit animal refers to a spirit that helps guide or protect a person on a journey and whose characteristics that person shares or embodies. In New Age spirituality, the four animals most commonly represented as the spirit keepers for the medicine wheel are the Bear, the Buffalo, the Eagle, and the Mouse.
Since I am a morning person I immediately thought of a lark. But then I thought – I am actually more mystical so perhaps it is the okapi – disguised yet intriguing – colourful and strong. The okapi looks half zebra and half antelope but is of the giraffe family.
Out of interest, I performed an online quiz and surprisingly discovered that my animal spirit is not the okapi. It is another animal that is powerfully connected to life force and primal energy. One that is, in many cultures, revered as a powerful totem, representing the source of life. When this spirit animal appears in my life, it likely means that healing opportunities, change, important transitions, and increased energy are manifesting.
