It is frequently said, “You need a platform.
If people don’t know your book is out, they won’t buy it.”
Who doesn’t love tech?
Without email, a website, and creative software we wouldn’t be able to do what we do for a living. Really? There are a lot of downsides to social media. It takes a lot of time to manage social media sites: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Goodreads, and Gmail accounts. People struggle with depression, anxiety, and the inability to focus on the work at hand.
You might remember Dr Cal Newport’s seminal TED talk, “Why You Should Quit Social Media” (check out this link).
An overview of the video:
- social media is NOT a fundamental technology
- it is an unsavoury source of entertainment
- they offer shiny treats for minutes of your attention
- and bytes of your data that will be sold
- used in an addictive fashion
2. the belief that it is vital to your success
- misconception that it is vital to your success
- opportunities will be lost
- Produce something rare and valuable
- social media does not produce value
3. the theory of “What’s the harm?”
- Social media brings significant harms
- designed to be addictive
- in a state of fragmentated attention reduces capacity for concentration
- psychological harms
- anxiety related disorders
4. The detox can be brutal
- uncomfortable
- anxious
LIFE after social media can be positive.
- productive
- intense concentration
- restorative peaceful way to spend time
