AUTHOR’S NOTE: Why I wrote Maxine & Ted – For all adults, loneliness and social isolation pose significant dangers to good health and this risk is even more concerning for older people. Seniors who live alone are subject to falls with no one to call for help. With AI technology becoming so advanced, more and more robots are welcomed into homes for companionships and as minders – enabling seniors to remain in their homes much longer. The most amazing thing is that androids are becoming so intelligent that they can be programmed to understand the human heart – designed to recognize emotions, hold conversations, even crack jokes.
MAXINE & TED
– the era of humans and AI
Adam was becoming very concerned when his 82 year-old father. Ted, a widow, began skipping meals and forgetting to take his pills. Adam gave Ted two choices – either be placed in a retirement home or accept Maxine a state of the art android robot to be his minder.
Ted found himself in a real conundrum. He was a resistor to modern technology and more dreadful was the very idea of accepting a female robot into his home – an AI to remind him to eat regularly and take his pills. Ted was determined that his dearly departed Rose would have never approved such a thing. In that regard, Rose and Ted were on the same page. Even worse, was Adam’s only other option – Ted moving into one of those ‘retirement homes’ where all too many of his friends had gone and were dead within months – having died of complete boredom.
