Language is the tool we use to empower our desires and it’s impact depends on how it is wielded. Words are a powerful influence and describe things – ourselves and others. The way in which it is done affects how a person responds, thinks and acts.

Literature is a powerful storytelling technology that unites us across space and time. Literature chronicles and preserves the ever-evolving human story. It invites us to reflect on our lives and, in discussion with others, to add our voices to the exploration of timeless human themes. Literature makes us think.

The “power of language” is to educate. The “language of power” is for the purpose of exercising power. The way in which the message is conveyed manifests a different message.

Literature has a unique capacity to touch the hearts and minds, and engage readers. It has shaped civilizations, changed political systems and exposed injustice. The written word allows the reader to analyse a character, to see what drives a character, and determine how that individual relates to others.

It’s a busy world and it’s getting even busier. Fewer and fewer young people are taking the time to sit down and read – cheating themselves of the written word – looking for a quick fix. A movie attempts to convey the same message as a book, in just two hours. However, viewers are not getting the full and accurate message. Literature leaves the reader open to interpretation.
