Artificial Intelligence – AI

Robotic minder & healthy aging

AUTHOR’S NOTE: Why I wrote Maxine & Ted – For all adults, loneliness and social isolation pose significant dangers to good health and this risk is even more concerning for older people. Seniors who live alone are subject to falls with no one to call for help. With AI technology becoming so advanced, more and more robots are welcomed into homes for companionships and as minders – enabling seniors to remain in their homes much longer. The most amazing thing is that androids are becoming so intelligent that they can be programmed to understand the human heart – designed to recognize emotions, hold conversations, even crack jokes.

MAXINE & TED

Aging with renewed purpose

When  82 year-old Ted, a widow of ten years, began skipping meals and forgetting to take his pills his son became concerned. As a solution, Adam purchased Maxine, a state of the art android robot, to be his father’s minder, a friend for life.

Ted found himself in a real conundrum. He was a resistor to modern technology which made the very idea outrageous. What was even more dreadful, Maxine was a female AI. Ted was certain that his dearly departed Rose would never approve such a thing. The downside was that Adam had threatened that the only other option was Ted moving into one of those ‘retirement homes’, the very place where all too many of his friends had gone and were dead within months – having died of complete boredom. Ted’s other concern was whether he could trust that device.
