Artificial Intelligence – AI
Robotic minder & healthy aging
AUTHOR’S NOTE: Why I wrote Maxine & Ted – For all adults, loneliness and social isolation pose significant dangers to good health and this risk is even more concerning for older people. Seniors who live alone are subject to falls with no one to call for help. With AI technology becoming so advanced, more and more robots are welcomed into homes for companionships and as minders – enabling seniors to remain in their homes much longer. The most amazing thing is that androids are becoming so intelligent that they can be programmed to understand the human heart, designed to recognise emotions, hold conversations, even crack jokes.
MAXINE & TED
AI – strange new minds
82 year-old Ted Carr, a widow of ten years, was given an ultimatum; either move into a retirement home or accept the AI android as his minder. As a resister of technology in general the very idea of having an Artificial Intelligence in his home was beyond outrageous. This was the worst conundrum he had ever been in.
On top of that, Ted was certain that his dearly departed Rose would never approve of him having a female AI in their home. Caught between seizing and freezing, Ted knew it was the AI or the old folks’ home where all too many of his friends had gone and were dead within months – having died of complete boredom. His biggest concerns were whether he could trust the AI and if it had a kill switch.
