Moth stories are a part of the oral tradition dating back in time.
The storytelling phenomenon, The Moth, comes from memories of growing up in St. Simons Island, Ga., where neighbors would gather late at night on a friend’s porch to tell stories and drink bourbon as moths flew in through the broken screens and circled the porch light.
Participants have included well-known authors like Richard Price, Salman Rushdie, George Plimpton and Garrison Keillor. The book includes scores of people from every background imaginable — from ministers to professional gamblers and a myriad of others.

Enjoy 45 stories from the last two decades. Some are heartbreakingly sad; some laugh-out-loud funny; some momentous and tragic; almost all of them resonant or surprising. They are stories that attest to startling varieties of human experience. And the shared threads of love, loss, fear and kindness that connect us.

Stories are so malleable; with themes that span the breadth of the human experience, tales of love, revenge, and adventure can find a home in any place and time, with characters that feel both familiar and fresh at the same time.
We live in a different time, where stories are not shared in that way any longer. Thankfully there are good books to escape into – for tales long told.
